Don’t charge me bro!

dboyWeb Development

Here’s a typical conversation with a potential client, right about the time they decide to take that bold first step (which is to choose DK Design as a potential vendor for web development and to request a proposal).

Client"You're a cool dude Dan, I think we can work together... send me a proposal!"
Me"Awesome! I'll get that right over to you!"
Client"Yeah yeah yeah... listen bro...listen... don't charge me a lot, alright?"

It’s a valid concern, since no one likes to spend more money than they have to. However, a typical mistake arises out of this concern, and that mistake is to go with a larger company for the goods and services that you really should get from your local developer.

I don’t mean to pick on GoDaddy… I have a GoDaddy account! They provide really cheap and easy domain, hosting and SSL services. But things can get expensive when you try to use them for building and maintaining a website. GoDaddy does indeed provide those services, but not at a reasonable price for the little guy, meaning the small to medium businesses that typically operate here in Hawaii.

Let’s take a typical example of the two most common services I provide: Building websites, and Maintaining websites:

Compare Prices – Building A Website

GoDaddy

$2500

Starting
  • Security software not included
  • No extra hardening to .htaccess or wp-config level
  • SEO not included
  • PRICE STARTS AT $5,000 for Ecommerce

DK Design

$1500

Starting
  • Includes WordFence Security (free version)
  • Security hardening at the .htaccess and wp-config level
  • Includes basic SEO
  • Price starts at $2500 for Ecommerce

Compare Prices – Monthly Maintenance with GoDaddy

Wait a second… GoDaddy does not even provide maintenance plans! You need to build one by combining some of their services:

Core Updates

$99 x 4

Required Weekly

Critical Patches

$99

Per instance

Site Scrub

$200

Per Instance

Total Cost

$400

MINIMUM

Here’s what the table says:
A monthly maintenance plan that included 4 Core Updates per month (the minimum I recommend) would cost you $400. If your site required any emergency work like a site scrub or a critical patch, you would need to ADD those instances to your existing monthly cost of $400.

Site Scrub

Here’s what the table says:
I will provide weekly updates to your core software and plugins on a weekly basis. FOR CRITICAL PATCHES, I’ll update your site right away, rather than waiting for the weekly maintenance routine to come around. FOR COMPROMISES: removal of all corrupted files and code is performed free.
